Fiscal Year 2009 DHS Communications Equipment Grants
In late 2008, the Department of
Homeland Security announced $3 billion in
emergency funding for 2009. This is $24
million more than last year, much of it allocated
for communications equipment improvements.
Visit the
"Emergency Funding Resources" webpage with

Update
Broadcasts even when Cell/Telephones are Down
During loss of computer, cell or
telephone broadcast control, ISS' new two-way redundant control option
keeps ALERT AM stations up via
user-provided, push-to-talk style transceivers. The option operates with the
same protocols as regular
ALERT AM cell/telephone control, ensuring continued
operation even when other modes
go down.

Interference Advisory
In Montreal,
Canadian CPAM on 1610 has applied to move
down the band to 1410. If this occurs, it
will ease night interference in the
Northeast on the frequency and open 1610 for
US licensing in Northern Vermont and New
York State. Stay tuned. |

Andersonville National Historic
Site Increases Visitorship 14%
Two strategically placed Information Stations
steer motorists on I-75 to the Andersonville site.
Billboards along the Expressway encourage travelers
to tune in. Another station at the entrance welcomes
guests and offers site specifics. See
a
case study of how and why Information Stations
make a difference.

Ventura County Uses
RadioSTAT during Swine Flu Testing to Allay Possible
Contagion Last year,
Ventura County near, Los Angeles, identified
needs that
led to ISS' development of the
RadioSTAT Portable
Emergency Advisory Radio Station. RadioSTAT is
used with portable road signs that instruct
motorists to tune to a special AM radio frequency
for critical information. Each station can quickly
be moved into position in an emergency and be
operated from a fixed location at other times.
Recently, to conduct swine flu testing requested by
local physicians, County
health officials employed RadioSTAT and signs to
instruct patients approaching in cars how to be
tested while remaining in their vehicles, thus
reducing exposure to the citizens themselves and to health
staff.

the story.

Orlando Broadens
Outreach
Orlando, Florida, began
with 1
ALERT AM station operating from its Emergency
Operations Center (see
the initial story) then added 3 more
strategically located stations, so simulcasts can be heard across the
entire City. How? By spreading costs across annual
budgets with a grow-able ISS system, i.e.,
adding
GPS Carrier Stabilization connected
via Wireless Audio Links and
Vertical Profile Antenna Systems to enhance
security and design. Proof positive
that planning across fiscal years with the right
system achieves far-reaching goals.
